Double Glazing Repair Experts for Windows and Doors

Dropped, sticking and misaligned doors adjusted.

Composite and uPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) door repairs are for popular entrance choices in modern homes. These doors are purchased due to their durability, insulation, and low maintenance needs. However, like all door types, they can develop issues over time.

Fortunately, many common issues with uPVC and composite doors can be fixed. With a bit of knowledge and the right tools we can sort these issues out, often without needing to replace the entire door. Here’s a closer look at the repair process for each type.

Common Issues with uPVC Doors and Their Repairs

uPVC doors are known for being resilient, but they can still experience wear and tear. Yet, some of the most common issues include misalignment, faulty locks, broken hinges, and issues with weather sealing.

Mending Door Misalignment

Misalignment in uPVC doors can cause them to stick or not close properly. This is often due to changes in temperature, causing the door to expand or contract. Usually, adjusting the hinges can resolve this issue. Conversely, we can manipulate with an Allen key or screwdriver most uPVC doors that have adjustable hinges. Our fitters can do some tweaking which should bring the door back into alignment, allowing it to close smoothly.

Lock Mechanism Issues

The lock mechanism, typically a multi point lock in uPVC doors, can sometimes jam or stop working. This may be due to misalignment or debris stuck in the locking system. First, we check the alignment as mentioned above. If that doesn’t work, we further inspect the lock itself. Cleaning the lock mechanism and applying a lubricant can often resolve minor jams.

For more serious issues, the lock cylinder may need to be replaced. Our expert will slide it out to replace with a new Euro cylinder.

Weather Stripping and Sealing Problems

Over time, the rubber seals on uPVC doors can wear out, causing drafts and reducing energy efficiency. Universal replacement seals can be sourced and fitted by our repair person.

Broken or Damaged Hinges Repaired

Door repairs include fixing hinges on uPVC doors. While they can also become worn, it can cause the door to sag or become difficult to close. Replacing or tightening hinges is typically a straightforward fix. However, if the hinge itself is damaged our expert would advise to replace it entirely.

Repairing Composite Doors

Composite doors, made from a combination of materials like wood, PVC, and insulation foam, offer greater strength and insulation than uPVC but may still experience issues. Many repairs are similar to those of uPVC doors, but with some unique considerations.

Swelling and Warping

Composite doors are generally more resistant to warping, but they can swell or shrink due to moisture or temperature changes. Unfortunately, this can cause the door to stick or not close properly. Nevertheless, adjusting the hinges sometimes help if the door has slightly shifted out of alignment.

Lock and Handle Repairs

Composite type doors also commonly use multi point locking systems, which can sometimes fail or jam. Our repair process is similar to that for uPVC doors: checking for alignment issues, cleaning the mechanism, and applying lubricant.

If the lock cylinder itself is damaged, it can be replaced with a new one. Our fitters ensure they choose a lock compatible with composite doors, as they have specific sizing requirements.

Fixing Frame Issues

The frame on composite doors can also be prone to damage over time. Cracks in the frame can allow drafts and reduce the door’s security. We can often fill small cracks with a resin based filler, while larger damage may require door replacement.

In conclusion, with necessary door repairs, both uPVC and composite doors can offer more years of reliable use. Competent fixes like adjusting hinges, replacing seals, and changing locks can often address common problems without the need for a door replacement, saving both time and money.

FAQs

It is possible to realign your uPVC door yourself if you have basic DIY skills by adjusting the door hinges.

However, it is best to leave it to the professionals as there are other methods that are more suitable. Our expert door technicians would assess and choose the best procedure according to your door type.

Bear in mind that some hinges have limited adjustment and would require extra intervention.

If your door shuts but does not lock, we can have it repaired. It could be your locking mechanism that has failed or the Euro cylinder. However, our repair person would first check to see if it an adjustment issue. With a door misaligned, it can prevent the locking mechanism to engage into the lock keeps and has to be balanced again to operate correctly.

No composite or uPVC door should have a gap as this would let air in and in some cases water can leak in. Although we can have it mended, it does depends on certain factors. Consequently, we can book an inspection visit so that our technician can check and advise you what repairs we can do for you.
