Choosing Your Window Handle

Window handles come in a selection of types, colours and designs. Markedly, it is crucial that we choose the correct spindle length to ensure it works with your existing window locking mechanism.

When we come out to replace a handle, we usually stock a variety of common handles with a selection of colours, designs and spindle lengths for aluminium and uPVC windows. Predictably, this means that most repairs are carried out on the spot. Yet, where required, other specialist handles can be sourced and ordered where possible.

Here we list the main window handle types that are available:

Espagnolette Window Handles

Espagnolette window handles are the common type for UPVC windows. Also, known as espag handle, it has a protruding metal spindle on the back which is attached to the window frame to turn the locking mechanism. The spindle is always fixed in position to allow for a firm and secure fixture. Presently, we can have it specified as slim inline or offset according to the design of your windows.

Cockspur Window Handles

Cockspur window handles are typically fixed by 3 screws which are installed directly into the window sash. Inherently, older windows in properties that don’t have an internal mechanism usually use this type of handle. However, cockspurs are also found on windows that are manufactured with a slimmer frame.

Tilt and Turn Handles

Tilt and turn handles are used on sliding patio doors as well as some windows. Specifically, this type of window handle is popular for high rise flats and properties with tricky access from the outside, as the window design makes them easy to clean from the inside.

Venetian Window Handles

These are typically espag handles with 2 screws to secure into the espagnolette mechanism. The main difference is that the venetian window handles have a low projection from the frame. Thus, the advantage to this type is the lack of the handle poking out through the blinds that are fixed close to the frame. This is a great handle if you’re looking for something flush to blend neatly with your UPVC windows.

Spade Window Handles

Spade window handles are also known as blade handles. These are constructed from aluminium or uPVC depending on the style of your windows. To iilustrate, these blade handles use the 2 peg locking mechanism to slide the handle into place.
