Adjust Doors to Open And Close Correctly

Glass First understands that uPVC door adjustments are essential for ensuring proper operation, security, and energy efficiency. UPVC (Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride) doors are popular due to their durability, low maintenance, excellent insulation properties and rigidness.

However, like all doors, they can require adjustments over time due to settling of the door frame, changes in weather conditions, or general wear and tear.

Do you need to adjust your uPVC door?

First, close the door and observe the gaps around it. Ideally, there should be even gaps along the sides and top. If the gaps are quite uneven, or if the door does not close properly as it is catching something, alignment adjustments are necessary.

Sometimes, the movement in the door can prevent the locking mechanism to function as it should. Again, an alignment may be necessary.

Adjusting your door hinges

UPVC doors are typically fitted with adjustable hinges. These hinges have screws that control the height, depth, and side to side position of the door. Our experts can adjust these accordingly to ensure that your door is no longer catching and shutting as it should.

Check the door’s operation

After our fitters make adjustments, we ask that you test the door by opening and closing it several times. Ensure that it moves smoothly and that there are no sticking points or gaps. The door should also latch securely without any excessive force.

FAQs

If your composite or uPVC door is not closing properly, it is possible that it is not aligned properly. This could be because the hinges have shifted, or even the frame, and the door is no longer operating corrrectly anymore.

There are several reasons why this may happen. Firstly, it can be a result of normal wear and tear where heavy use can put significant strain on the hardware.

Secondly, humidity, or changes in temperature can affect your door. When the weather is particularly hot or cold, the frame or uPVC door could have expanded or contracted and become out of shape, which could cause it to not close properly.

A dropped uPVC door is likely to be caused by a misaligned hinge or by packers moving out of place. We can usually fix this by readjusting the hinge or resetting the packers without needing to replace the door.

However, if the dropped door is caused by warping or from damage to the frame, then it is only possible to fix the dropped door by replacing the door. Frankly, a warped or damaged door is difficult to fix. 

Depending on if the door is sticking as a result of misaligned hinges, then it is possible to fix this problem by readjusting the door’s hinges provided there is room to adjust.

However, if it is a result of a warped door, substandard manufacture or even poor fitting, then the door itself must be replaced instead.
